BORDEAUX WINE
HISTORY
Saturday February 2nd 2013 4PM-6PM $50.00 PER PERSON
Wine has been grown in Bordeaux for two thousand years. Most probably vines grew there before the arrival of the Roman in the year 56BC. The poet Ausonius wrote about it, a château still bare his name, the "Château Ausone". But unlike most of the other French wine regions, wine in Bordeaux was developed by merchants. In other parts of France, wine was under the power of monks making Bordeaux one of the allowed commodities to be sold and traded, much like our modern stock market.
RHONE VALLEY
WINE HISTORY Saturday February 16th 2013
4PM-6PM
$35.00 PER PERSON
Côtes du Rhône was with Provence the first region to produce wine in France. It seems that the first vine was planted by vine growers coming form Marseille. Because of the Rhône river, it was easy to send the bottles of wine to an harbor on the Mediterranean sea (Marseille). The vineyards was then developed by the Romans. The oldest vineyards are Côte Rôtie and Hermitage. The Rhône region has many Roman monuments to visit such as in Vienne city. In the middle age, monasteries began to manage vineyards such as Châteauneuf which was rename Châteauneuf du Pape when the Popes used to spent their holidays there ! A clear sign of recognition for the region.
BURGUNDY
WINE HISTORY
Saturday March 23rd 4PM-6PM
|$50.00 PER PERSON
The production of wine began in Burgundy when the Romans invaded the region. Later, during the sixth century one of the nearby kings gave his vineyards to the church. At the time of the French Revolution most of the best Burgundy wines where produced by monasteries. One of the consequences of the revolution in Burgundy was the confiscation of the vineyards from the church to the republic and their fragmentation in small plots. Nowadays, the system of small vineyard still prevails in Burgundy.
WINTER CURRICULUM at the Tampa Wine Institute
The Tampa Wine Institute kicks off its Winter Curriculum. This series of classes will take a decidedly different approach. We will explore various regions, and of course sample wines, but we will also explore the history, economy, culture and evolution of each region from the earliest records up to today. Only by studying the past can we understand the present. Instructor, Jim Sirna, will lead the classes and as always at least 6-8 wines will be served in a sit down, round table format, along with Cheese & Charcuterie from Beaune's Wine Bar. Classes are by reservation only and payment is required at the time you reserve. Call us now at (813) 241-8587 to reserve your seats!
