Best Buy Must Buy
It just seems to start earlier and earlier……the drinking I mean. It is 10:10AM and I am at it again! Late yesterday we got delivery of a wine I have been waiting to receive for more than six months. At that time we were tasting through a lineup of famous Chianti Producer, Castello di Volpaia’s , wines. The rep pulled out a bottle I had never seen before from them. We tasted the wine and I was quite impressed. When I asked the price I fell off my chair and bought the entire allocation for the state of Florida! So when I got in the morning the first I did was pop a bottle. Just as I remembered. Stock up on this one. If you come by the store today I will have a bottle open to sample.
The Castello di Volpaia was built in the 11th century as a fortified village on the Florence/Siena border. Although only part of the original protective walls and two of its six towers are still standing, the medieval layout and buildings within the village are still intact, making Volpaia undoubtedly one of the best preserved villages of its period.
In the Tuscan dialect, “Citto” means “a young boy.” In the tradition of Bordeaux Châteaux – Mouton Rothchild has its Mouton Cadet, Cheval Blanc has its Petit Cheval – Castello di Volpaia has its Citto.
*2015 Volpaia “Citto” Toscana IGT
$11.25btl/$121.50 per case
(Jim Sirna 95)
This baby Super Tuscan “Citto’ or ‘young boy,’ is a blend of declassified juice from Chianti Classico with Cabernet Sauvignon from Volpaia’s Maremma property. 65% Sangiovese and 35% Cabernet. The Sangiovese provides the telltale Tuscan red and black cherry flavor profile, while the Cabernet provides the muscle. The 2015 Citto is a vivid ruby color. This generous, silky wine displays ripe fruit aromas with intense cherry and red berry flavors on the palate. It is complex, with a nice finish and represents a stellar value. At $10 per bottle when purchased by the case, this is my new “House Wine”. Make it yours. Perfect with roasted or grilled meats and pasta with red sauce.
