Winemaker Peter Vinding-Diers is a challenger for the title of the Most Interesting Man in the World. In the ’60s, the Danish Vinding-Diers served as a war correspondent reporting from Vietnam, Aden, Malaya, Indonesia, Hong Kong and Nigeria. Then he started making wine–first in South Africa, and then in Bordeaux, Brazil, Kenya, Spain, Chile, and Hungary. Even more impressive, he essentially revitalized Graves in the ’80s, reinvented Hungarian Tokaj in the early ’90s, and in the late ’90s, he invigorated Ribera del Duero when he prompted his nephew Peter Sisseck to start a new venture there, the now-renowned estate Pingus. Most recently, Peter has landed in Sicilia, where he makes stunning Syrahs at his estate Montecarrubo.

Montecarrubo sits on a few-millions year old extinct volcano. It was a piece of land grazed by sheep and full of rocks and boulders where Diers planted the nearly virgin plot with a Massal Selection of Syrah vines supplied from Rhone Valley by his friend Pierre Marie Guillaume of Cote Rotie fame.

2016 Vinding-Diers Montecarrubo * IL Piccolo

40% Syrah, 30% Cab Franc and 30% Merlot from vineyards near the village of Noto, the Piccolo has a scent mixed with blackberry, blueberry and wild herbs. On the palate it has a chalky edginess and comes across as slightly monolithic. It has plenty of fruit and enough structure to evolve for 2-3 years.

80% Syrah, 15% Cab Franc and 5% Merlot, the Cuvee Speciale is quite special. Sourced from various parcels but mostly from a single vineyard Vigna Grande which lies atop an ancient volcano. Deep purple in color, the nose exhibits smoke, mineral, damp earth, espresso, and blackberry. Full-bodied, layered and beautifully ripe, forget bottles for 4-5 years and enjoy over the following decade or more.

This 100% Syrah has a fabulous sense of elegance and purity. It immediately reveals lots of black olive, bacon fat, black raspberry and blackberry fruit notes intertwined with hints of charcoal and underbrush. This impressively endowed, medium to full-bodied Hermitage-styled wine should drink well for 10-15 years.

This single vineyard wine made from 100% Syrah is worthy of a great Cote Rotie. I was blown away when we first tasted this stunning wine, which comes from the single vineyard site, Vignolo. Deep ruby/purple color and a beautiful, intense bouquet of black olives, a touch of pain grille, cassis, cherries, and incense. This is the finest expression of Syrah that I have seen in Italy.
