2011 Le Capitozze * Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Casa di Monte
92pts RP, 94pts JS
$65btl or
EMAIL SIX PACK IN OWC DEAL- $300.00 ($50btl)

The 2011 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Casa di Monte opens to a dark brick color with ruby and garnet highlights. This is a dark and sophisticated wine with an impressive level of complexity. Earthy tones of crushed stone are followed by dark fruit, plum, leather, balsam herb, tobacco and pressed rose. The wine is introspective and careful in the way it dispenses of its intensity. All that power emerges in well-measured doses. That slow evolution makes it all the more intriguing and arousing.

2012 Argiolas * Turriga Rosso IGT
91pts WS, 93pts JS
$69.99btl or
EMAIL SIX PACK IN OWC DEAL- $330.00 ($55btl)

The 2012 Turriga is one of the best wines to come from Sardinia this year. This compelling blend of Cannonau (85%) with Carignano, Bovale and Malvasia Nera is especially focused and intense in 2012. The wine shows extreme balance with seamless integration of black fruit, spice, crushed stone and leather. Yet you also get a pinch of wild rusticity that grounds this wine in a sense of place. Simply put, it reveals terrific balance, length and clarity, all in a style that is at once powerful yet medium in body.

2010 Val di Suga * Brunello di Montalcino Poggio al Granchio
93pts RP, 93pts JS
$79.99btl or
EMAIL SIX PACK IN OWC DEAL- $420.00 ($70btl)

The 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Poggio al Granchio is a shapely and powerful wine with a tight approach and a smooth succession of wild berry, spice and cola-like aroma. The wine shows a lot of the balsam herb aromas that are so unique to Sangiovese in the Montalcino appellation. In the mouth, this wine presents tightly-knit tannins that should relax and flesh out with more aging time in the bottle.

2011 Val di Suga * Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Spuntali
92pts RP, 95pts JS
$99.99btl or
EMAIL SIX PACK IN OWC DEAL- $510.00 ($85btl)

The Val di Suga 2011 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Spuntali is a single-vineyard expression from a plot of land located in the southwest quadrant of the appellation where average temperatures are higher. This is a dark and brooding Sangiovese with thick concentration and an inky dark appearance. Vigna Spuntali sees an important oak regime with two years in new French 300-liter barrels. Dried blackberry and cherry follow to teriyaki, barbecue spice and dark cola. The oak element is significant, but I find that the integration is more successful in Vigna Spuntali given the richer and more textured quality of fruit at its core.
