A question for Burgundy Lovers…..Want to drink Top Notch wines from Gevrey Chambertin and Pommard at prices that seem to good to be true? About three months ago I was tasting with an importer the wines of Moillard Grivot whose Domaine is located in Nuits St Geroges. I was astounded by several things. The quality of the wines was superb, they were terroir correct and the pricing seemed like it was from 20 years ago! To say the least, I was impressed. Four of the wines I ordered just arrived today, the Pommard and Gevery below and also some amazing Bourgogne, both Blanc and Rouge, that you will see an offer for shortly as well. Of course we opened a bottle of each immediately not caring that it was 10am! Just as good as I remembered. And at these prices, a true Burgundian Bargain. Grab at least a mixed case of these two gems you will not regret it!
Appearing under many labels; Charles Thomas, Thomas-Moillard, Moillard and Moillard-Grivot, Maison Moillard is a major operation in the Côte d’Or with a long history. Symphorien Moillard married vine owner Margueritte Grivot in 1848. The business, however, only really began to grow after 1850, following a chance meeting in Nuits St.Georges between a travelling Belgian notary and Symphorien Moillard. Together they tasted the Moillard wines, and so impressed was the notary that he persuaded Symphorien to make selections of wines to send to Belgium – this was the start of Moillard’s wine trading and its first export activity. Jumping to modern times, my friend and winemaker extraordinaire, Pascal Marchand of Comte Armand, Domaine de la Vougeraie and now Marchand Tawse was hired in 2007 to improve the quality of the wines and that certainly was the case.
*2016 Gevrey Chambertin A.C. Moillard Grivot
$39.99btl/$479.88 per case
(Jim Sirna 94)
The 2016 Gevrey Chambertin has a complex bouquet with deep, brooding dark fruits hints of wild mushroom and forest floor. The palate is silky smooth with supple tannins, perfectly balanced acidity and sensual mouth feel. The finish is supremely elegant filled with wild berries and a complexity not usually found in Village Level wines. Just divine!
*2015 Pommard A.C. Moillard Grivot
(Jim Sirna 95)
$39.99btl/$479.88 per case
This is a powerful wine with considerable power and dimension. Offering up aromatics of black cherries, ripe red fruits and exotic spices it is wonderfully satiny and succulent with a core of fruit that is juicy and tangy. The finish is ample and full bodied with none of the rusticity usually associated with Pommard. Another Village Wine that punches well above its humble origins.
