Drink for Free?  Buying strategies: Futures and the Super Eight

There are generally fifty wines that are always worth looking over in every Bordeaux vintage. Yet, there are a few of those wines that will always be investment grade or the ‘Blue Chips of Bordeaux’, good vintage or bad.  These wines are known amongst professionals and collectors as ‘The Super Eight’.  Their quality rarely vacillates more than a few points in rating, they just make more or less wine depending on the crop.

The notion that one could drink for free maybe shocking to most, but we are here to tell you it’s nothing short of true.  West Palm Wines feels, by splitting your annual investment into half of the ‘Super Eight’ or other highly sought after Classified Growth’s futures and the other half into ‘drinking wines’, one can usually pay for the ‘drinkers’ with the appreciation from the Classified Growths.

Those who invested in 2003 Chateau Latour (rated 98-100pts by Robert Parker at the “En Primeur tastings) are very aware of the potential.  At the beginning of trading, Chateau Latour opened for around $300 a bottle (as did most of the First Growths).  Six weeks later the price was dancing around $400, a profit of $100 a bottle.  To boot, very little Latour was left on the market due to a tiny production in 2003, insuring their value was going to continue to rise for years to come.

If that same person also bought a case of 2003 Chateau Clerc Milon (90-93pts RP) or Chateau Grand Puy Lacoste (91-94pts RP) or both for the opening price of $50, they’ve covered the price of the two cases with the appreciation from the case of Latour. Thus, having two cases of highly rated wines to drink (for free) when the time was right and one case to lay down until ready…which will continue to appreciate as long as it’s stored properly. (See ‘Wine Storage’)

The 2004 vintage is already shaping up to be one to follow as the price of past great vintages continues to rise.  We are sure the best wines will go quickly and pay off big dividends.  Please don’t hesitate to contact us for you expert wine investment advice.
