WPW ITALIAN WINE OF THE YEAR

La Querciolina (“the little oak”) comes from the Sassetti family, multi-generational vineyard owners and winemakers who began with the historically important Pertimali estate and its famous Brunello di Montalcino. As soon as the Southern Tuscan region of Montecucco became an official wine appellation in the late 1990s, the Sassettis saw the potential for making great quality wine at fair prices and purchased the Querciolina farm, rehabilitating the vineyards according to their experienced methods. The resulting style of the wine owes a lot to the climate and terrain of the Montecucco region, which is distinct from the Montalcino wines to its north (which are in turn distinct from the wines of the classic Chianti region to its north). The estate farms organically, uses native yeast fermentation, and ages the wine for 12 months in traditional, large 3000 liter oak barrels made from subtle Slavonian oak.

Last week Jim put out his “Wine of the Year” and we sold it out in just hours. This week it’s my pick and I found the most amazing Tuscan gem from Livio Sassetti. This “Baby Brunello” styled wine drinks like it costs triple the price. Best part is…our price is the lowest anywhere. Be fast on this one, only 15 cases are available. NO CALLS will be taken, you MUST respond to this email to secure your order. Wine will arrive Wednesday.

Beautifully polished and bright, the 2015 Montecucco La Querciolina is a pure expression of Sangiovese Grosso, with some Canaiolo, from the wild and rustic hills of the Montecucco appellation along the Tuscan coast. Made by Livio Sassetti from Montalcino, this wine is fermented in open cone-shaped oak vats with gentle, manual punch-downs and longer maceration times. Fruit is sourced from 50-year-old vines planted in tufaceous clay and calcareous marl soils on a breezy perch located 300 meters above sea level. This is a beautiful creation with an impressive sense of brightness and purity of fruit. Crushed flowers, spices, sweet red cherries and herbs waft from the glass. In the mouth, the wine is medium-full bodied, robed in plentiful crushed velvet tannins with an earthy & licorice-like sweetness in the finish. Only 800 cases were produced.
